Human-Faced Fish AI Video: How It Went Viral
In January 2024 I posted a strange video built around a fictional discovery: fish with eerily human-looking faces swimming in a place I called Lake Samsara. The idea was simple—make something that felt just believable enough to stop the scroll, while pushing AI-generated imagery into unsettling territory.
The idea behind the human-faced fish
The video presented the creatures as a newly discovered species called Homo Piscis. Lake Samsara and the story surrounding the fish were part of the fictional concept. The goal was not to document a real animal; it was to create a tiny piece of believable-looking speculative media.
What surprised me was how quickly the footage escaped its original context. Clips and screenshots started circulating across social platforms, sometimes reposted as if the fish were real. Fact-checkers in several countries eventually traced the footage back to the Headtap Videos channel and correctly identified it as digitally created imagery.
Why did it look believable?
The strongest AI visuals are not necessarily the most polished ones. Real footage is messy. Water distorts detail. Subjects move unpredictably. Compression destroys information. A strange creature partly hidden below the surface can actually feel more convincing than a perfectly lit monster standing in the middle of a frame.
That became one of the lessons I kept carrying into later Headtap projects: give the viewer enough to understand what they are seeing, but not so much that every detail can be inspected like a studio render.
The weird second life of an AI video
Once a video gets reposted, cropped, translated and separated from the original account, the context changes fast. The human-faced fish ended up being discussed far beyond the audience I made it for. That part became almost as interesting as making the video itself.
